Three checks you can do in under ten minutes before you trust any link, including the ones people post in chat.

Verifying an onion link is the single highest-value habit on the market, and it takes less time than the doubt it removes. The point is not to prove the link is "real" in some absolute sense, because nothing is. The point is to reduce the question from "is this the market?" to "is this the market according to a source I already trust?", which is a question you can actually answer.

The three checks

The first check is the address itself, compared character by character against the current signed list. Not a glance, a real comparison, because the clones differ by a single character in a string of fifty and a glance cannot see one character. The second check is the list, confirmed to be signed by the key you already trust, because a stale or forged list is as useless as a wrong address and the signature is what separates the two. The third check is the behavior, a quick look at whether the page that loads matches what you expect, the layout, the menu, the login gate, because a clone that passes the first two checks but loads the wrong interface is a contradiction worth stopping for.

Why the order matters

The order is the list before the address, and the reason is that the address is only meaningful against a standard, and the standard is the signed list. Verify the address against a list you have not confirmed and you have checked a question against an unverified answer, which is circular. Confirm the list first, through its signature, and then the address has something real to be measured against. Get the order right and the whole pass is a minute. Get it wrong and you can pass every check and still land on a clone, because the two errors cancel each other out and leave you exactly where you started, unsure.

Do the pass once, end to end, on a machine you trust, before you ever type a password. That first careful run is the one that builds the reflex, and the reflex is what saves you on the hundredth visit, when you are in a hurry and the clone is counting on exactly that hurry.
