Getting Monero for your first order
All guides
The cheapest ways to hold XMR, what a cold wallet is, and why your bank may ask questions at certain thresholds.
The market spends only Monero, which means the first task for any new buyer is getting some, and the ways to do it range from fast and convenient to slow and careful. The right choice depends on how much you are buying and how much you want the purchase to stay quiet, and the thresholds that change the answer are lower than most people expect.
The fast way
An exchange that sells Monero directly, with a card or a bank transfer, is the quickest route and the one most first buyers use. The account takes a little verification, the purchase takes minutes, and the coins land in your wallet before you have finished deciding what to buy. The cost is that the exchange sees your name and your amount, which is acceptable for a small first purchase and less so if you would prefer the purchase to not be tied to you. For a modest first order the convenience usually wins, and the privacy cost is a price most people pay without thinking about it, which is fine as long as you know you are paying it.
The careful way
If you would rather the purchase not connect to your name, the careful route is to buy a more common coin first, move it to a fresh wallet, and swap it for Monero through a service that does not ask for documents. It takes longer and costs a little more in fees, but the chain from your bank to the Monero is broken into steps that none of them individually identifies you. The trade is time and a small fee against a cleaner trail, and for anyone who plans to keep using the market, the careful way is the one that compounds in your favor, because the privacy you build on the first purchase is the privacy you get to keep on every one after it.
The threshold that matters
One number is worth knowing before you buy. Most banks and exchanges start asking questions once a single purchase crosses a certain size, and the threshold is low enough that a large first buy can trip it without you meaning to. If you are buying a meaningful amount, split it or use the careful route. If you are buying a small first order, the fast route is fine and the threshold is nowhere near you. Knowing the number is what turns a surprise into a plan, and that is the whole point of doing the setup once, properly, before the first order rather than figuring it out under pressure after the fact.
